We believe community is a place that supports the people who live within it, builds connections, and provides a service to create a bond between neighbours.
Bird on a Wire Creations endeavours to practise all these qualities of community by selling local artists’ work. When we focus on the local makers, we are ensuring that 45% of the income stays within the community. From our inception, we exercise this mandate in all we do to build community as we grow.
A few ways we ensure to engage with our neighbourhood is to stay connected and to participate in as many events that take place during the year. A few of the events are:
- Safe Trick or Treat for children that live in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood
- Father’s day / Car Free day
- Mural Festival
- Sola Tapestry Reveal
Other ways we are able to stay in rhythm with the community is to be an active member of the BIA (Business Improvement Association) as well as find ways to give back to the community.
We have recently introduced an annual Innovative Makers Grant. The purpose of this grant is to help artists (of all ages & backgrounds) think of their craft from a professional perspective so that they can envision it, one day, selling in stores.
We support local artists by selling local artwork within a 100 mile radius of Vancouver. This gives local artists an advantage to showcase their art and as a result, we build a thriving community of artists. Our customers love shopping at Bird on a Wire because they know they're getting something locally made, sustainable and one-of-a-kind.
